Fergus Falls was recently ranked as the number one place to retire in Minnesota following a SmartAsset study.
SmartAsset is a website and retirement calculator that uses location, annual income, monthly savings and more to help people plan for retirement. The site recently conducted its seventh annual study to measure cities’ tax friendliness, availability of medical care and other opportunities for seniors to determine the best places to retire.
With a 16.1% tax burden, one doctor office per every 1,000 people, 1.1 recreation centers per 1,000 people, 1.5 retirement centers per 1,000 people, and a population that is 24.1% seniors, Fergus Falls, the county seat of Otter Tail County, came out of the study with the best ranking in Minnesota.
Alexandria, Grand Rapids, Bemidji and Detroit Lakes came behind in the following four places.
How High Are Sales Taxes In Minnesota
The statewide sales tax rate in Minnesota is 6.88%. That’s the sixth-highest statewide rate in the U.S. Additionally, cities and counties can collect their own taxes of up to 2%. On average, the total rate in Minnesota is 7.47%.
Those rates do not apply to all items, however. Most groceries and most types of clothing are exempt from the sales tax in Minnesota. All medicine, including both prescription and non-prescription drugs, is exempt from sales tax.

Twin Cities Ranks Among Best Places To Retire In Us 131st Best To Be Exact
MINNEAPOLIS Minneapolis-St. Paul ranks among the best places to retire in America, according to a new ranking from U.S. News & World Report. That being said, it’s perhaps surprisingly low on that list of places.
The rankings considered happiness of residents, value and affordability, tax rates and quality of health care, the job market, and overall desirability.
The Twin Cities ranked 131st on the list, with a relatively low score in desirability.
“Minneapolis and St. Paul not only have big-city amenities like museums and sports stadiums, but also have an approachable Midwestern feel,” U.S. News wrote. “Locals embrace the harsh winters and partake in hockey, ice fishing and cross-country skiing. During the spring, summer and fall, Minneapolis and St. Paul come alive with outdoor music festivals, baseball games at Target Field and recreational opportunities on the area’s lakes.”
Not helping the metro area’s ranking are our winters.
“Winters in the area can be brutally cold,” the magazine wrote.
Not that winters hurt the rankings of three places in Wisconsin that all ranked higher than Minneapolis-St. Paul. Green Bay and Madison were back-to-back at 41st and 42nd on the list, with Milwaukee also managing a spot in the top 100, at #96.
In contrast to the Twin Cities’ ranking among the best places to retire, they ranked 27th on the list of best places to live in the country overall.

UNDATED — The dry conditions are getting worse as we officially move into fall.
The U.S. Drought Monitor’s update Thursday says 42 percent of Minnesota is now abnormally dry including all of Stearns and Sherburne counties and the southern part of Benton county.
The Moderate Drought is up to 15 percent, from 11 percent a week ago.
The Severe Drought is now at four percent, up from two percent last week. The driest area remains in the southern Twin Cities Metro area.
Here in St. Cloud, we’ve had 1.48 inches of rain so far this month, which is .71 inches below normal. For the year to date, we’re at 27.36 inches of precipitation, which is 4.55 inches above normal.

We enjoy being close to so many parks and trails, and love how many trees there are. There is just a general sense of everything being open, natural, and safe. We lived in this community when I was in high school and it was so much fun to jump in the canal and swim with my sisters or load up the boat and spend the day at Anclote Island.
Gulf Harbors is a large community with condos and large and small houses. Many houses have a canal in the backyard that brings you right out to the Gulf of Mexico.
