A College Town Named As The Best Place To Retire In The Us
Anyone considering Charlottesville as a place to retire is immediately impressed by the fervor with which residents are devoted to the arts, literature and a love of learning. This fact is undeniably a tribute to an esteemed lineage that began with such notable personages as Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. |
New retirees drawn to this college town are delighted to discover that this tradition continues today and heightened by the influence of the University of Virginia, a venerable institution of higher learning which significantly impacts the artistic and cultural life of the city and also provides a tremendous resource for active adults who have an opportunity to continue their pursuit of knowledge.
Located just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, with the Chesapeake Bay only a hundred miles to the east, Charlottesville is an hour from Washington, D.C. and Richmond. The New York Times has described the city and the surrounding area as a place “where the land rolls away toward the mountains in the west with a beauty that snatches the breath at the top of each crest and the bottom of each vale.”
Further enhancing the cultural life of the community are the Charlottesville Symphony, several art museums and such well-established venues for live dramatic performances as the Heritage Repertory Theatre and the Four County Players, Virginia’s oldest continuously operating company.

What People Are Saying About Charlottesville

Charlottesville This is a great area for retirement. C\’Ville has something to offer just about anyone. I was familiar with the area, used to do a lot of college recruiting at UVA during my working years. Despite many trips to the area, I never learned about one of its hidden gems until I moved here….The Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia. A unique partnership between the community and the UVA School of Music, it offers an excellent repertoire of a classical subscription series, excellent holiday concerts, and is now beginning a \”Pops at the Paramount\” program at the Paramount Theatre on the Downtown Mall. Definitely worth considering! Charlottesville visit We visited Charlottesville during the 2008 builders Parade of Homes, in our ongoing quest for the a place to retire in the next five or ten years. It’s a picturesque city, lot’s of mountain views and wooded areas/neighborhoods. Also a plus to us is that it is very much a college town and has a nice active downtown area. Those two pluses on the Saturday evening that we were there combined to overload us a little though, the downtown pretty much had the strong feel of a college town, a little too much so for us. U Va would be a great university to be located near though, good competitive sports teams, but not ridiculously hard to get tickets . The other thing that surprised us about C-Ville was how quickly while driving, that you transition from the city to “really rural”.

Charlottesville Is The Happiest Place To Retire In The Us
Last week we heard the welcome news that Charlottesville is considered the happiest place in the country to retire, according to a new ranking by Washington, D.C., based publisher Kiplinger.
We have topped many Top Ten lists before, but our area has seen an increase in recent years in the numbers of seniors coming from all over the country but mostly from those up north who are tired of the cold winters and many companies have decided to make an investment in the types of housing and activities they want to offer these new arrivals.
So Many Activities
Charlottesville has long been known for its natural beauty and historical presidential homes and university Thomas Jeffersons Monticello and James Monroes Highland, formerly known as Ash Lawn-Highland, and the University of Virginia all draw hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
The Downtown Mall has become a must see a stop for most every visitor and many tourists have taken advantage of the help provided by our local Charlottesville Downtown Visitors Center at 610 East Main Street, located next to the Pavilion with its iconic white draped roof for those outdoor shows that attract intemperate weather.
The Charlottesville Albemarle Convention & Visitors Bureau website also provides some great information on what to do and see in our area.
