Is The Florida Panhandle The Next Big Retirement Destination

byCari Oleskewiczon September 15th, 2021

Think about moving or even just visiting Florida and some standard spots probably come to mind. Theres Miami and Palm Beach to the southeast. Tampa and Sarasota are on the Gulf Coast, and inland Orlando is the theme park capital of the world. Jacksonville and St. Augustine in the northeast also draw their fair share of tourists and new residents.

The next big retirement destination in The Sunshine State, however, may be a surprise: the Florida Panhandle.

What makes this region the next big thing? Well, there are fewer crowds and less tourism, giving new residents and locals plenty of space to spread out. Its tucked into the northwestern part of the state, on the Gulf of Mexico where the water is calm and clean. The area is also a wilder, more natural part of Florida that requires some intentional searching to stumble upon it.

Theres plenty of golf, entertainment, fine dining, and outdoor recreation in the vibrant cities of Destin, Pensacola, Panama City, and Panama City Beach. There are even a growing number of active lifestyle communities.

Lets take a closer look at why more and more people are adding the Florida Panhandle to their list of potential retirement destinations.

Kayak Matlacha.Matlacha is such a cool, artsy fishing town about a 30 minute drive from Fort Myers. The kayaking was easy and took us by some really cool homes. Located on an island, surrounded by nature preserves, it is just a really fun, quirky spot that makes it fun to get on the water, too. We rented kayaks from Carmen, and after our paddle ate seafood and drank cocktails at Hooked Island Grill. From that spot we saw some manatees in the waters below and took in a beautiful sunset.

Visit downtown Fort Myers.Downtown Fort Myers, Florida has a great nightlife as well as a really awesome art deco vibe . Weve eaten at some good restaurants, enjoyed outdoor theater, and generally walked around the area. Its a fun spot to enjoy, and it is always a bit of a surprise as to how much it has to offer.

We paddled Ding Darling, a national wildlife refuge. The kayak trail took us through some mangroves but was so easy and short that we actually did it twice! You can see the canoe/kayak trail on this map here. Paddleboarding is also allowed.

We grabbed Key Lime Pie after our paddle at Gramma Dots.

So most of these retirement communities are quite safe when you are inside of the development.

The problem is, youll have to leave that safety for dining, shopping and entertainment, going to the doctor and more. So if a retirement community in located in a city or town with a high crime rate, it wont be considered for our list, with one important exception as youll see below.
