Start A Tax Service Business

How To Use Your Retirement Funds (401k, IRA) To Start A Business

Yvette Sadovoy from New York, New York, USA started Savvy and Suite Ltd over 4 years ago, a tax service business.

  • Revenue: $/ month
  • Location: New York, New York, USA

Unknowingly, Savvy and Suite has been brewing for the last 15 years. I began working in my fathers accounting firm when I was 12 doing basic data entry of the tax forms. Every year I learned more and more until 18 when I was able to complete a full tax return on my own. Since then I have dedicated myself to developing my skills and really crafted my own approach to tax preparation.

Stay true to yourself and committed even during the low times, your success will come.

Over the years I have worked with companies from so many different industries and I learned that every company, even in the same industry, operates differently. Every entrepreneur has their own method of growing their business and respectively, spend their money that way. By getting to know each and every one of my clients to the smallest detail of their habits, I am able to create a tax return that reflects their true expenses. In this way, I am ensuring that no deduction is overlooked and the tax savings are optimized. The cookie-cutter approach just doesnt cut it for anyone. No pun intended!

Enrichment Activities For Children

While Americans continue to have children, shrinking budgets for education mean that both traditional academics and enrichment subjects like music, art and athletics often take a significant hit.

A successful business to start might be one that teaches enrichment activities to children. According to a 2018 U.S. Census Bureau report, kids are just as involved in extracurricular activities today as they were 15 years ago. And some research indicates that nearly half of American parents spend more than $1,000 annually on their childrens activities.

You could launch a gymnastics center or music school, become a swimming instructor or kids yoga teacher, or focus on some other child-centered activity. If you have a skill that could be easily taught to young students, you might already have a profitable business in the making.

15 Lucrative Retirement Business Ideas to Start After 50

Sometimes the idea to start a business in retirement is spurred by being laid off from a longtime position.

Take Barbara Winard, of Jersey City, N.J. After 25 years as a senior editor and multimedia writer for online encyclopedias at the publisher Scholastic, Winard lost her job in January 2019. She has since turned her lifelong passion for travel into becoming a freelance travel writer with a travel blog, The Baby Bloomer. She writes about traveling solo, as well as with her adult daughter or husband Martin Kozlowski, to locales near and far.

Her total investment: between $2,500 and $3,000.

My major expenses were buying a new Mac laptop creating a website on Squarespace getting a domain name, establishing an LLC using WordPress and Bluehost for the blog and speaking with a few advisers on ways to possibly make money via a blog.

In the past year, Winard estimates that she has earned about $1,000 from sites that paid for her travel articles had some travel expenses covered in exchange for writing an article and got invited to speak at events about traveling after 50.

My secret for starting a business so cheaply is that my husband helped me set up my blog and website, Winard says. Kozlowski is a political cartoonist who does online illustrations and knows a lot about graphic design.

When I left Scholastic, I had no idea that I was going to do this, but being a freelancer is not as scary as I thought it would be, says Winard.

Offer Move Management Services

RetiredBrains surveyed their readers about what businesses they had started in retirement, and some variation of Move Manager came up more than once.

This is a service that involves helping people move. The physical lifting work is still done by a moving company, but the move manager organizes the process.

According to these service providers, downsizing seniors and overwhelmed young families need help managing the details of the moving process, and theyre willing to pay for it.

This often involves cleaning out garages, packing, labeling, organizing, and planning the various pieces of the move. Part of this could involve senior relocation services, which help seniors find a trustworthy and affordable retirement home.

Many houses are filled with old possessions and unused things. A big part of the move management service involves selling, throwing away, or donating unwanted items.

Once the client is in their new home, unpacking and organizing everything requires work as well.

Find The Right Financing

Starting a Business in Retirement

It can be difficult for startups to qualify for some traditional business loans, as they often require multiple years of business history for approval. Instead, new business owners might consider startup funding options, such as microloans, grants, crowdfunding, or asking friends or family for an investment.

Business credit cards are also an option for short-term financing, especially for everyday business purchases. With a business credit card, you can earn perks and rewards on your spending, as well as start building a business credit history.

Start A Catering Business

Nestor Nidome from Crestmore, California, USA started Elegante Catering ago, a catering business.

  • Revenue: $20,000/ month
  • Location: Crestmore, California, USA

For as long as I can remember I have always been attracted to the idea of being a business owner. Ive tried many businesses starting with my own DJ company. I got some business cards, printed them at Staples, passed them out, and waited for the calls.

It took a bit of time, but eventually, the calls started to come in and bookings started to happen. I did that for a couple of years until one of the DJ gigs some gangsters got into it and I was almost in the middle of a gang fight. Thank GOD things calmed down, but after that, I started looking for another business!

During this same time, the whole tech bubble was growing and I wanted a part of it. I took some coding classes in college and started using HTML to code my website from scratch. I kind of borrowed a lot of ideas from Yahoo but it was going to be mainly focused on my local city. I visited some businesses and got some of them to advertise. Things seemed to be going well when the bubble burst and I was once more left to venture out and look for something else.

How to Retire in 7 Years Starting with $0

There are so many ways you can earn money by working online. If you have a craft or hobby that youd like to make an extra income with, then starting an ecommerce store may be the correct route for you. You can use any of the numerous platforms that are available for individual sellers or even start your own website.

You dont have to be an experienced web developer to create a professional-looking online store either. As web developer Gary Stevens of Hosting Canada notes, creating a new website today is easier than it ever has been thanks to website building tools that come equipped with user-intuitive drag-and-drop interfaces.

A website builder interface is a WYSIWYG experience, Stevens says. That means that as you drag-and-drop elements around on the screen you see a representation of your website. To the human brain, this visual aesthetic makes us feel happy and in control of our environment.
