Carol DOnofrio was Chair of the UCB Retirement Center Board from 2009-2011 and served as a member at large from 2006-08. She served on the Learning in Retirement Committee for many years, chairing the committee in 2017-2019. Carol passed away on April 14, 2020.

Academy For Learning In Retirement
The Academy for Learning in Retirement is a volunteer-run organization whose purpose is to provide meaningful presentations on diverse topics of interest to members of the community. ALR is affiliated with, but not funded by, New Mexico State University through Doña Ana Community College. The programs are presented by NMSU faculty and other experts who are deeply knowledgeable in their fields.
Each month of the academic year, ALR normally offers four presentations on a topic, which are presented by one or more speakers. Occasionally a series has fewer than four presentations. Four topics are offered in the fall semester from September through December, and five topics in the spring semester from January through May. Each semester the topics are eclectic, and may broadly include the sciences, arts, humanities, history, national and international affairs, economics, and other topics.
In order to pay an honorarium to the speakers, advertise the programs, and cover other expenses, ALR charges a nominal fee to attend the presentations.
Institute For Learning In Retirement
The Institute for Learning in Retirement, or ILR, is a vibrant community of retirement-age members who are engaged in lifelong learning, personal fulfillment and continuing education through participation in a variety of courses, programs and activities.
Peer learning is at the heart of the ILR concept. Personal fulfillment is the primary goal. Self-motivated adults who wish to enhance their own educational experiences can achieve these aspirations through ILR programs in a relaxed collegiate atmosphere.
The only requirements are a desire to learn and actively participate in a flexible, non-competitive environment.
- ILR membership is open to all adults of retirement age, regardless of race, gender or religious affiliation.
- Several hundred residents from Gainesville and the surrounding communities currently participate in ILR programs.
ILR has operated since 2001 in partnership with the University of Florida, and in-person classes take place on the Oak Hammock campus.
Because of the relationship with the University of Florida, it was natural for the ILR to recognize academic research of undergraduate and graduate students that addresses important issues in the aging process. The ILR hosts two annual research poster exhibitions, enabling participating UF and Santa Fe College students to showcase their work and be recognized for their scientific contributions.

Learning In Retirement News
Our 2022 spring semester program was a huge success as previous and new members alike returned to classes after a long COVID break. We are looking forward to another great semester this fall with over 35 courses already booked. A large percentage of these courses are new and bring in additional qualified instructors from the community. We will once again offer in-class only, Zoom-only and hybrid course offerings. Although, most members are electing to return to the classroom for more personal interaction, socialization and learning experience. This semester will also offer more short courses for your enjoyment. Classes start Monday, September 12 and end Friday, December 23, 2022. Classes have staggered start and end times during the semester, so you have the flexibility to sign up for classes that match your schedule.
We are especially excited to present a new online registration system for ease of registration, review of available courses and immediate confirmation of your class selection. Watch for more information in mid-July when the new 2022 Fall Course Catalog will be available both online and by mail for those individuals requiring a hard copy. All of this will be presented at our upcoming Annual Kick-off Event, August 5, 2022, at the Anthony J. Natalizio Center, Rooms S-104A/B, on the WCTC Pewaukee Campus. Entertainment, presentations, refreshments and on-site registration will be available.
Exercise Your Mind With Good Friends
UConn Extension‘s Center for Learning in Retirement provides meaningful and serious intellectual activities for retirees and other adults from all walks of life, conducted in an informal and relaxed atmosphere. There are no academic requirements.
CLIR classes are offered in two formats: single classes and multi-week classes . To attend these classes, you can become a CLIR member by registering online or by mail – note that there is a $25 registration fee for doing so.
All classes will be held at the Vernon Cottage on the Mansfield Depot Campus at the University of Connecticut.
Join CLIR today. New members are always welcome! If you would like to sample a class or two at no cost, you are invited to do so.

WCTC is proud to host Learning in Retirement of Waukesha County . LIRWC is an affiliate of the Road Scholar Lifelong Learning Institute, an international organization that provides programs for ongoing learning. LIRWC members can take advantage of events, special interest groups and courses in music, art, literature, computers, history, financial planning and more.
The Learning In Retirement Program Has Gone Virtual
The Learning in Retirement Program began in 2000, continues to offer free courses for retirees from UC Berkeley, UC Office of the President and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and their guests. LIR offers courses in a variety of subject fields, including natural sciences, social sciences, the humanities and the arts.

How Is The Academy For Learning In Retirement Organized
The Academy for Learning in Retirement is an organization independent of New Mexico State University yet affiliated with NMSU through the Doña Ana Community College.
The Advisory Board of ALR consists of up to twenty-five volunteer members. New members are selected by current Board members. The Advisory Board operates under a set of By-Laws which outlines a simple set of operating guidelines. The Advisory Board meets monthly except for the summer months and is led by two people who hold the office of co-chair. Other officers include a Secretary, Treasurer, and several Committees each with a Chairperson. Committees are organized to: design, print and distribute brochures maintain and care for ALRs archives plan, investigate, and organize each series of presentations including arranging for speakers market the ALR to make more community members aware of our work and more. Advisory Board members are generally retirees who have enjoyed attending ALR presentations and are willing to work to keep this resource available to our community, and we have active community members as well.

Fall 2022 Programming And Registration
This fall, MVILR classes will be held in person in classrooms, on Zoom and at satellite locations from Sept. 19 to Nov. 11. Courses range in format from large lectures to small discussions taught by volunteer facilitators, members, and guest professionals who enjoy sharing their expertise, talents, interests, and enthusiasm for lifelong learning.
Learning In Retirement Opportunities
LIRWC courses are held during the day at WCTCs Pewaukee and Waukesha campuses and other facilities in the area. Offerings include:
- Short-term courses, one to six weeks in length, on topics including art, music, religion, computers, history, aging, financial planning and more. Most courses cost just $20 or less, and there are no pre-requisites, no exams and no grades!
- Day-long and overnight chartered bus trips to museums, art exhibits, theater performances and other special events throughout the year.
- Distinguished speakers on a variety of topics.
- Groups for special interests including books, genealogy, philosophy, hiking, singing, golf, Bridge, Mah-jongg, Sheepshead, theater, creative crafters, recipe trading, and beading and jewelry making.

The Mohawk Valley Institute for Learning in Retirement is a non-profit organization that has provided opportunities for local seniors to learn, live, grow, move, think, socialize, and create since 1996.
MVILR has partnered with MVCC’s Center for Corporate and Community Education to continue providing local retirees with rich learning opportunities without homework, exams, or grades. MVILR is now located at MVCC’s Rome Campus, which features large dedicated classrooms for its courses, state-of-the-art special event spaces, and free parking. Class registration begins 25 calendar days before the start of the first class of the semester.

Who We Are
Institute for Learning in Retirement is offered by Old Dominion University. The curriculum is varied retirement age people choose the programs they wish to attend. Each Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer terms a schedule announces the classes and activities and briefly describe the presenter. During the course of the year you will find classes offered such as the arts, social issues, science and technology, history and current issues, local issues, health-related subjects, and the Great Books.
Members become as actively involved as they wish — sharing knowledge and participating in dialogues and seminars. Socializing is an important aspect of ILR. Field trips, a once-a-year luncheon and trips to museums, the opera, and other places of interest are offered.
Lecturers are invited from the academic world to speak on their specialized subjects, as are other knowledgeable instructors and peer presenters.
