Meet The Future Homeowners

It would be a crowning achievement to own a Habitat home and feel secure and happy about my future. Not to mention that Id be able to paint the walls!

~ From Lauries application letter

Habitats newest homebuyer, Laurie Huttunen, came to Asheville 38 years ago to visit and care for her retired parents. Like so many, she fell in love with WNC and decided to move her life here. Since then, she has worked for and volunteered with an exhaustive list of local non-profits. More specifically, Laurie has spent decades supporting the local arts scene by sharing her community-focused mindset and knack for design, always lending a hand to sustain the areas vibrant culture which first drew her in.

Now, sustainability is exactly what Laurie is seeking in her future Habitat home. Ashevilles housing market has undergone dramatic changes since Laurie arrived, and she worries that while her needs and income change as she ages, the instability that comes with renting will become unmanageable. She believed that owning her own home during retirement would be impossible, until she learned about Asheville Habitats Aging in Place program. As Laurie puts it, This was a Eureka moment, because it gave me hope that I could once again own my own home, especially a safe and well-designed home.

Croquet Court At Ashevilles Deerfield Retirement Community A Mcgill Associates First

St. Giles Chapel – Christmas Eve Service

Croquet, anyone?

About 100 residents and staff of Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community attended a dedication celebration for the recently upgraded croquet court at the facility. Members of the Deerfield Croquet Club, dressed in customary whites, participated in the ceremonial first strike of a ball at the new court.

Being a focal point of outdoor recreation at the retirement community, the old court received much wear and tear over the years and was in need of a major makeover. Residents contributed a significant portion of the $140,000 price tag, and the project was the collaborative effort of a number of local firms.

McGill Associates is pleased to have been a part of this unique and exciting project, which was finished on budget and ahead of schedule.
