The Tricare Retiree Dental Program

TRICARE’s military dental insurance for retired personnel is administered by a different provider: Delta Dental. Delta has held this contract since 2012 and now insures over 1.5 million Uniformed Services retirees.

Under the TRDP, military retirees of any age can receive affordable dental care both in the United States and internationally. The dental cover includes a wide range of dental treatments including dentures, dental implants, braces, and accident and emergency cover.

Eligible retirees can also enroll their spouses, plus children up to age 21 .

Members can enroll at any time, but those who sign up within four months of retiring get to skip the 12-month waiting period that usually applies to certain major treatments .

You can see any dentist with a TRDP plan, but Delta says its enrollees save an average of 22% by visiting a TRDP network dentist. This is because these dentists have pre-agreed maximum amounts to charge for each type of treatment.

Another benefit is that network dentists handle your claim directly with the insurer rather than you having to pay the full amount up-front and then submit tiresome claim forms.

Military Retirees Will Soon Have New Dental/vision Plans

The Office of Personnel Management announced that the Federal Employee Dental and Vision Insurance Program will be offered for the first time to TRICARE eligible retirees and their families during the 2018 Federal Benefits Open Season. Active duty family members will be eligible to enroll in FEDVIP vision insurance.

The TRICARE Retiree Dental Program ends December 31, 2018, therefore enrollees in this program must choose a dental plan through FEDVIP to have coverage in 2019 as enrollment isnt automatic. This announcement affects 1.63 million beneficiaries enrolled in TRDP and offers a choice to an additional 1.3 million eligible retired beneficiaries not currently enrolled in TRDP.

Most covered under a TRICARE plan may enroll in a FEDVIP vision plan. This coverage, including eyeglasses or contacts, is in addition to the routine eye exam benefit that many beneficiaries have under TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select.

The Federal Benefits Open Season enrollment period will run from November 12, 2018, to December 10, 2018, and it runs concurrently with the TRICARE Open Season. Coverage will be effective January 1, 2019.

OPM is thrilled to offer a variety of quality vision and dental plans to our military retirees and their families, and for the first time, an option for vision insurance to active duty family members, said OPM Director Jeff Pon. We look forward to providing FEDVIP to the military, their families, and retirees.

What To Look For In A Dental Insurance Provider

Not every dental insurance plan is a great deal. When you shop for insurance, be sure to look for these key features:

  • An affordable deductible: Your deductible is a set amount of money you must spend on your own dental bills before your insurance kicks in and starts paying for your care. If you choose a plan with a deductible thats too high, you could get stuck with an insurance plan that you cant afford to use. Search for plans with deductibles that fit your budget some insurance providers even offer $0 deductible options.
  • A low coinsurance percentage: Coinsurance is the percentage of your dental health care costs you need to cover after you meet your deductible. For example, if you receive a bill for $100 and you have a 20% coinsurance rate, youd be responsible for covering $20 out of this bill. Look for an insurance plan with low coinsurance rates to get the most out of your dental insurance plan.
  • Plenty of covered treatments: Unlike health insurance providers, dental insurance providers are free to pick and choose which services theyll cover. For example, many dental insurance companies exclude adult sealants and orthodontics from coverage. Be sure to check your official statement of benefits before you enroll in any dental insurance plan.
