Original Medicare doesnt cover routine dental or eye care. This means that without additional coverage, youll be expected to pay full cost for most oral and visual needs, including prescription eyewear.

The good news is there are a few situations where Medicare A or B will help you out with dental or vision needs. Medicare usually covers emergency dental procedures that require a hospital stay or complex surgeries that require dental exams. Additionally, if youre eligible for both Medicaid and Medicare, some dental costs, including dentures, are also typically covered. Medicare Part B will also cover an annual exam for eye diseases, such as macular degeneration or glaucoma.

No Gap In Your Coverage

Your insurance eligibility as a retiree begins on your retirement effective date. Since your coverage as an active employee continues through the end of the month in which you terminate employment, there should be no gap in coverage as you go from active to retired status as long as you apply timely. Refer to the Timely application and proofs section below for more information. However, if you file your application after the month in which you terminate employment, or if you waive coverage when you’re first eligible, there could be a six-month wait to begin your coverage.

The insurance carrier answers any questions about insurance claims or if you want to know if a particular service is covered. If you have enrollment questions or problems, contact the Michigan Office of Retirement Services . Your insurance cards will arrive a few weeks after your retirement effective date. If you need health services after you retire but before your cards arrive, contact the insurance carrier directly to get your policy number or to verify coverage.

Military Retirees Will Soon Have New Dental/vision Plans

The Office of Personnel Management announced that the Federal Employee Dental and Vision Insurance Program will be offered for the first time to TRICARE eligible retirees and their families during the 2018 Federal Benefits Open Season. Active duty family members will be eligible to enroll in FEDVIP vision insurance.

The TRICARE Retiree Dental Program ends December 31, 2018, therefore enrollees in this program must choose a dental plan through FEDVIP to have coverage in 2019 as enrollment isnt automatic. This announcement affects 1.63 million beneficiaries enrolled in TRDP and offers a choice to an additional 1.3 million eligible retired beneficiaries not currently enrolled in TRDP.

Most covered under a TRICARE plan may enroll in a FEDVIP vision plan. This coverage, including eyeglasses or contacts, is in addition to the routine eye exam benefit that many beneficiaries have under TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select.

The Federal Benefits Open Season enrollment period will run from November 12, 2018, to December 10, 2018, and it runs concurrently with the TRICARE Open Season. Coverage will be effective January 1, 2019.

When you turn 65, you will receive information from Social Security informing you of your automatic enrollment in Medicare Part A. You will also be asked if you wish to enroll in Part B. There are three different National General dental and vision policy options so that you can find the right ancillary coverage for your healthcare needs. Any policy will cover preventive, basic, and major services from day one. The annual maximum and select benefits will increase in year two.

The National General dental, vision, and hearing PPO plan has three benefit levels for dental benefits. All three levels pay for dental procedures, including routine exams and cleanings. The Level 2 and Level 3 plans cover major services at 25% in the first year and 50% in the second year.

The Level 2 and Level 3 plans also cover dentures at 25% in the first year and 50% in the second year. Implants are only covered on the Level 3 plan with 25% coverage in the first year and 50% coverage in the second year.

Level 1 has an annual maximum of $750 the first year and $1,500 the second year. Meanwhile, Level 2 has a maximum of $1,000 in the first year and $2,000 in the second year. Finally, Level 3 has an annual maximum of $1,500 in the first year and $3,000 in the second year.

The L1 Plan has a $15 copay for annual exams, $130 maximum per 24-month period, and a $25 copay for lenses. The maximum benefit for progressive lenses is $55.
