TDP is available to the dependents of active duty service members. This voluntary dental insurance is also available to eligible members of the National Guard, the Reserve, and their family members. Covered individuals can seek dental services under Tricare within the U.S. and overseas. To be eligible, the family members military sponsor must have no less than 12 months remaining of their military service commitment. The TRICARE dental program is available to retired military, and it does have some benefits like an allowance for braces, no waiting period and no annual deductible. However, it may not be best for everyone. Some people find that dental discount plans or even private insurance are a better option for them.
Military Retiree And Dependent Fedvip Dental And Vision Plans
During Open Season military retirees can enroll in any of eight different vision plans. In addition, family members of uniformed service members, of reserve component members, and survivors who are enrolled in a TRICARE health plan will be able to enroll in any of these eight vision plans. This vision coverage is available as an additional benefit not previously available.

The TRICARE Retiree Dental Program is available to:
- Service members entitied to retired pay, regardless of age
- National Guard and Reserve retirees, including those who are not yet receiving retired pay
- Current spouses
- Children up to age 21
- Surviving spouses who have not remarried and surviving children of service members, providing the service member passed away during active duty or retired status

Previous Dental And Vision Plan Changes From 2021
On August 11, 2020, the Office of Personnel Management announced that they have expanded the list of insurance carriers in Federal Employees Dental and Vision Program .
- Dental Carriers increase from 10 to 12
- Vision Carriers increase from 4 to 5
The number of dental carriers available will increase from 10 to 12, and the number of vision carriers will increase from 4 to 5 in the coming year. All vision carriers are offered nationwide, while five of the dental carriers will be offered on a regional basis only.
The new national dental carrier is UnitedHealthcare Dental PPO. The new regional dental carriers are Dominion Dental EPO, and HealthPartners. The new national vision carrier is MetLife Vision.
The competitive application process allowed OPM to strengthen the FEDVIP program through increased focus on wellness and education. OPM improved quality assurance, financial reporting processes, and enhanced fraud waste and abuse requirements, OPM said in a news release.
Even before these improvements, results of a 2019 survey of federal benefits indicated solid levels of satisfaction among FEDVIP enrollees. Those survey results are meaningful given that a total of 6.9 million federal employees, members of the military, retirees, and family members are currently covered under the dental and vision insurance programs.

Is Tricare Dental Right For You
For most families and situations, Tricare Dental Plan coverage is a great option. However, some individuals may find it more cost-effective to self-insure for dental expenses. Individuals in the National Guard and reservists and retirees in particular may find self-insuring more cost-effective. The cost-benefit analysis for each situation needs to include:

The Tricare Retiree Dental Program
TRICARE’s retired military dental insurance is administered by a different provider: Delta Dental. Delta has held this contract since 2012 and now insures over 1.5 million Uniformed Services retirees.
Under the TRDP, military retirees of any age can receive affordable dental care both in the United States and internationally. The insurance covers a wide range of dental treatments including dentures, dental implants, braces, and accident and emergency cover.
Eligible retirees can also enrol their spouses, plus children up to age 21 .
Members can enrol at any time, but those who sign up within four months of retiring get to skip the 12-month waiting period that usually applies to certain major treatments .
You can see any dentist with a TRDP plan, but Delta says its enrollees save an average of 22% by visiting a TRDP network dentist. This is because these dentists have pre-agreed maximum amounts to charge for each type of treatment.
Another benefit is that network dentists handle your claim directly with the insurer rather than you having to pay the full amount up-front and then submit tiresome claim forms.

Canadian Forces Dependants’ Dental Care Plan
In June 1987, the Treasury Board Secretariat of Canada approved the implementation of the Canadian Forces Dependants’ Dental Care Plan . The plan became effective on 1 October 1987 for all Regular Force and Reserve Force members on Class C service to provide dental coverage for their dependants. Once enrolled in the CF for 3 months, members are eligible to join this voluntary premium free plan through their unit orderly room.
