Living In Areas Or Place Where They Cant Be Out Anymore
An all-too-common occurrence and fear for many of us is having to go back into the closet as we age.
Most retirement and assisted living communities are properly trained or equipped to work with older, LGBT people. With the Equality Act still stuck in congress, many states dont offer protections to LGBT seniors thats scary!
Thats, again, why the list above and the facilities with the SAGECare certification are so important. Use these resources to find a home and community where you can thrive as your whole self as you age. Its your right.

The 20 Best Cities To Retire In If You Are Lgbtq
SeniorAdvice.com, a website that focuses on senior housing, has just announced its second annual report on the best places to retire in the United States for the LGBTQ community, of which there are an estimated 3 million people aged 55 and older in the country.
The cities are scattered across the country, with multiple locales in California and Florida having both a large senior population as well as a high number of same-sex households. Other good retirement cities were included because of the senior support services they provide, their reputations as gay-friendly communities, or their abundance of hospitals, home health and Medicare providers.
The list may contain some surprises!
More than 100 factors were considered in developing the list, said a SeniorAdvice spokesman. Among them: the percentage of LGBTQ population in the area, available social activities, festivals, weather, the existence of an LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce, presence of gay-friendly senior communities, quality of health care, number of hospitals and pharmacies, local and state legislation protecting the LGBTQ community, cost of living, and the citys SeniorScore SeniorAdvices own scoring system designed to identify and measure livability for seniors.

Buy Adequate Health Insurance
If youre currently employed and have company-sponsored health insurance, buying health insurance isnt an issue for now.
If youre over 26 years old, not on your parents health insurance and unemployed, employed part-time, self-employed or retired, you need to buy health insurance. If youre retired and under 65-years-old, youre likely no longer eligible for company-sponsored health insurance , youll need to buy private insurance.
Even if youre retired, 65-years-old and on Medicare, you may want to consider buying private Medigap or Medicare Advantage to complement Medicare. Studies show that LGBT people typically have higher healthcare costs than our straight peers, and you dont want to risk having inadequate health care. That said, health care is never easy or cheap, which is why its so important for LGBT people to prepare more aggressively for retirement.
