Study Ranks Winchester 8th Best Place To Retire In Virginia
WINCHESTER According to a study from financial technology company Smart Asset, Winchester is the eighth-best place to retire in Virginia.
The study gathered data on three regional factors that impact quality of life for retirees, including tax-friendliness, medical care and social opportunities.
Researchers looked at state and local tax rates, considering both income and sales tax. They calculated the effective rates based on a retiree earning $35,000 annually from retirement savings, Social Security and part-time employment.
Income taxes paid were subtracted from the gross income to determine disposable income. Sales taxes paid were calculated based on the disposable income being spent on taxable goods.
Next, researchers determined the number of doctors offices, recreation centers and retirement centers per thousand residents in each location and then measured the number of seniors in each city as a percentage of the total population.
Finally, researchers ranked each location on those factors, then calculated an average ranking for each area and weighted them equally.
In the data, Winchesters tax burden was listed at 14.8%. There were six doctor offices per 1,000 people, one recreation center per 1,000 people and 0.3 retirement centers per 1,000 people. The data showed that 15.9% of the population are seniors.
Overall, Winchester scored a 33.61 on the Smart Asset Best Places to Retire Index.
