Inaction Can Be Costly

If you have left money behind, it would behoove you to track it down. The average balance in forgotten accounts is $55,400. Over a lifetime, says Capitalize, failure to reclaim these assets could cost individuals as much as $700,000 in retirement savings, an estimate based on data from the U.S. Department of Labor, the Census Bureau, 401 record-keepers, IRAs and the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College.

Forgetting about old 401s, and how much money is in them, is very common, says Kashif Ahmed, a CFP at American Private Wealth in Bedford, Massachusetts. Recently, we uncovered one for a client that had more than triple what she thought it had. Youve worked for this money, so its important to locate it and keep building it, says Tess Zigo, a CFP at Emerge Wealth Strategies in Palm Harbor, Florida. I’ve seen many young folks believe it or not who have old accounts sitting in money market funds not earning a dime.

Income And Percent Of Income To Save

Deciding what percentage of your annual income to save for retirement is one of the big decisions you need to make when planning. If youre just starting out on your retirement planning journey, saving any amount is a great way to begin. Just keep in mind that youll need to keep increasing your contributions as you grow older.

So how much is enough? Financial services giant Fidelity suggests you should be saving at least 15% of your pre-tax salary for retirement. Many financial advisors recommend a similar rate for retirement planning purposes.

But even then, the 15% rule of thumb assumes that you begin saving early. It also assumes youd be comfortable replacing 55% to 80% of your pre-retirement income. If you start later or expect youll need to replace more than those percentages, you may want to contribute a greater percentage of your income.

Tracking Down Your Plan

If you think youve lost track of a savings plan, search your files for old retirement account statements. These should provide some key data to help your search, such as your account number and contact information for the plan administrator. If you dont have any statements, contact your former employers human resources department.

If your employer filed for bankruptcy, your 401 balance is protected from creditors and is likely still held at the investment company that administered your plan. In the case of a pension, it was either taken over by an insurance company or the federal Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp., which protects traditional pensions. You can track down your pension at

Its also possible that your employer turned over your 401 balance to your states unclaimed property fund. Your states treasury department should offer an online service that lets you search for your money. You can also check the National Registry of Unclaimed Retirement Benefits.

Old Age Security Pension

The Old Age Security pension is a monthly benefit for Canadians who are 65 or older. You can get OAS benefits even if you’re still working or have never worked.

You dont need to contribute to the OAS pension in order to benefit from it. You can start to receive OAS at age 65 or choose to defer for up to 5 years. For every month you delay receiving your OAS pension, the higher the monthly payment will be.

Youll typically be eligible for the OAS pension if you are a Canadian citizen or legal resident and have lived in Canada for at least 10 years. The amount you will get from the OAS pension depends on how long you lived in Canada after the age of 18. You will typically be eligible for the maximum amount if you lived in Canada for 40 years or more.

You may be selected for auto enrolment in the OAS pension. This means that you wont have to apply to start receiving your OAS pension. You will receive a letter a month after you turn 64 years old telling you if you are chosen for auto enrolment in the OAS pension. You can still defer receiving your OAS pension if you are eligible for auto enrolment.

If you dont get a letter telling you that you are eliglble for auto enrolment then you will have to apply for the OAS in writing by completing and mailing in the application form.

Any time that you undergo a major life change, its a good time to review your portfolio. This is because your investment objectives and/or risk tolerance may have changed. For example, when you get married, you now have to think of a spouse and potential children. Many newly married couples also want to buy a house. This can change the way you should be investing from when you were single and only had to worry about funding your own lifestyle. The same is true for other major life changes, from having a new baby to getting divorced to experiencing a death in the family.

Cant I Just Move All The Money To One Account

Payee Definition

Not if you want to avoid paying excessive taxes. Moving money from one bank account to another has no effect on any of this. But moving money from a tax-deferred retirement account to a Roth, for example, is a different matter. This is called a rollover, and the rules surrounding rollovers are super easy and simple, right?

We called these The Two Towers for a reason

The rollover options available to you, and the implications of each one, are so complicated there simply isnt room here to discuss them all. But here are a few of the issues in play:

  • Which accounts are you transferring from and to?
  • Are you still employed when you do your rollovers?
  • How long can you wait to move the money to another place after youve moved it from the first?
  • Do you have the money sent to you as a check or straight to a new account? Does it matter?
  • What happens if you inherit an IRA or another account from your parents?
  • What if you inherit it from your spouse?

As you can see, youll need help walking across the rickety rollover bridge without falling into the ravine below.

What about real estate income? Ongoing passive business income? Self-employed income?

Do you see why the question about how to get just one simple monthly retirement check is so hard to answer?

Check Your Defined Benefit Pensions

These pay a retirement income based on your salary and how long youve been a member of the scheme.

These are also known as final salary or career average pension schemes.

Theyre usually only public sector or older workplace pension schemes.

If you belong to one, your pension provider will usually send you an annual benefit statement.

If you dont receive a statement, you can ask for one.

The statement shows how much pension you might get. It might assume that you take your tax-free cash lump sum.

Next Steps For Your Money

If your old 401 plan is still with a former employer, one option is to leave the money there. But you may not pay as much attention to the account, which could lead to a portfolio thats not appropriate for your age and risk tolerance.

If youre still working and have a 401 at your new job, another option is to roll over the funds into your existing plan, assuming your employer allows it. Another option is to roll the money into an IRA. Having your savings in one place will make it easier to manage your investments.

If youve lost track of a pension, request a pension benefits statement from the plan administrator. Give the administrator your address and phone number so it can reach you to begin payments. You may need to prove your work history and eligibility for the pension you can do so by providing the plan administrator with old W-2 forms or an earnings statement from Social Security, which you can get by filing Form SSA-7050. You can get this form at or by calling Social Security at 800-772-1213.

When Theres A Major Drop In The Market But Dont Overreact

When theres a major drop in the stock market, it can be an excellent time to add to long-term positions. The caveat here is that investors can often get emotional when markets are down sharply, so youll want to be careful to act rationally and not based on your fears. Youll particularly want to avoid selling any positions when markets are down if their long-term stories are still intact.

Follow These Steps With Help If You Need It

At the same time, finding your old accounts may be challenging for several reasons. In the first year of the pandemic, for example, hundreds of thousands of U.S. businesses closed permanently. In addition, says Zigo, you may have moved, or changed your email address, so your previous employer cant find you. Your old 401 plan may have changed sponsors. One of my clients has tried 10 times to reach a previous sponsor. It can be a frustrating process. And the bigger the hurdle, the less likely we are to try, she says. But help is available. A qualified financial planner can guide you through the following steps.

1. Take stock of your accounts

First, make a list that includes every employer where you contributed to a 401, suggests Charles Sachs, a CFP at Kaufman Rossin Wealth LLC in Miami, Florida. Next, call each one to see if they still have an account in your name, and update your contact information, if needed. Reaching out to them is the only way to find out where you stand, Sachs says. Its common for our clients to discover one or two old plans where they still have funds.

2. If a company has closed, check these websites

You can search for your money, which may be considered unclaimed property, at databases such as and Both have links to state treasurers, comptrollers or other officials who update their lists of unclaimed assets regularly.

3. Rollover the money directly to avoid expensive withholding
