How Should The Church Plan For Their Pastors Retirement
Succession conversation should start early, just like planning for retirement. Churches want their pastors transition to be as seamless as possible, and they want to know that their pastor will be taken care of during their retirement. Here are three things your church should do now, to help prepare your pastor for retirement.
Make sure your pastor is being compensated well – Far too often, ministers pass up a raise or allow themselves to be under-compensated for the sake of the kingdom. While your churchs missions and ministry are important, it is also important that your pastor is taken care of now and in the future in order to have the resources to continue serving well after their pastoral days are over.
Start planning your pastors succession – Whether your pastors retirement is 3 years down the road or 30 years, it is never too early to start a succession conversation. Having a smooth transition can be difficult, but planning early can help ensure that your pastors succession is seamless.
Remember, the best thing you can do for your church is to take care of your pastor. Start preparing for your pastors retirement now, so you know they will be taken care of when it is time for them to retire.

Retirement Best Practices For Pastor And Congregation
The retirement of a pastor from his or her ministry is a unique and critical transition involving the pastor, his or her family, the staff, and the congregation. Planning together for this transition offers the pastor and congregational leadership the opportunity to manage the transition. It also serves as the first step toward working together to do their best in ministry in their last months or years together.
Too often the retirement of the pastor is approached with secrecy, a lack of openness, and an attitude of biding our time. Parking lot conversations among church leaders become times of gossip and questions: Has he or she talked with you about retirement? How old is she? How long do you think he will stay? And the pastor talks about retirement with his/her family, trusted colleagues, and friends, but not with key church leaders for fear of being a lame duck: Dont tell anyone that I am thinking about retirement.
Developing and implementing a transition plan builds a solid foundation for ministry for the congregation and the retiring pastor. A transition plan allows the pastor and congregational leadership to have control of the transition and avoids the pastor becoming a lame duck by providing direction for the remaining months of vital ministry until the retirement date. Without a transition plan, the pastor simply waits to see what happens after the announcement of the retirement date.

Throw A Retirement Party
While it is an emotional time as you see your pastor move onto the next chapter of their lives, that doesnt mean you have to end their time there on a sad note. Throwing a festive and happy retirement party is a great way to celebrate and honor your pastor.
People can share their stories with others at the party about the good times they have experienced with the pastor or how they have contributed to the community in a larger way. Some can be silly, as humor is always invited to lighten the mood. But you can also share stories of hardship they have overcome. While these moments are more heartfelt, they can be extremely impactful if presented inthoughtfully a thoughtful way.
This would also be a great time to present the personalized pastor appreciation gift as well. A member of the church who knows the pastor very well can stand up and say a few words, share some spiritual scripture, and take a moment to present the award or gift to them.
Honor Through Worship Music
Every church has a music department that consists of a team of talented individuals who sing or play instruments during regular services. The group could put together a special compilation of music that is curated for the retiring pastor. These songs could be performed at the special service or their retirement party. Another way to get the children involved would be to include a childrens chorus for an added sentiment.

Host A Special Service
This, of course, would be the responsibility of the church to coordinate. But a great way to honor a retiring pastor or clergy member would be to host a special commemorative service. It would be held during a normal Saturday or Sunday service time as it would be more convenient to bring the entire congregation together. Sometimes it can be easier to bring people to the church during times they were already planning on coming as opposed to a separate service.
The pastor would have an opportunity to speak to the church community about his/her time serving the church. It can also be a beautiful way to tie in other clergy members who have served with as well to come together for one last service.
How Should The Pastor Prepare For Retirement
There are countless examples of pastors who make good money, but for one reason or another, are not financially prepared for retirement. This causes stress for the pastor, the pastors family, and the church. The earlier a pastor begins planning financially for retirement, the better. Here are three important things you, as a pastor, should be doing to help prepare for retirement.
Start saving now! – While your retirement may feel like it is years away, it is important to prepare for retirement as early as possible. The only way you can ensure you will be taken care of during retirement is to start saving now. Put money aside every month for your future retirement and let it build compound interest. Compound interest will help your retirement funds grow quickly and significantly.
Make a plan – Do you know when you want to retire or what you want your retirement to look like? Start planning for retirement early so you can be sure that you are able to retire when and how you want to. Make sure there are things you look forward to about the coming chapter of retirement so you dont stay in ministry when God is telling you its time to move on.
Talk to your church about retirement – Let your church know when you plan to retire and how they can help when that time comes. Your church can help you with your retirement savings through housing allowances, deferred compensation, and other benefits. Help your church help you by talking about retirement early.
