Garth GreenGarth Green6 minutes agoWhile the facility itself is nice and the accommodations acceptable, I have serious reservations about the quality of nursing and medical care my mother is receiving there. The nurses and nurse assistants do not have the basic competency to empty, clean, and reassemble an ileostomy bag. My mother has been there for over 2 weeks and no one has been able to perform this basic function. It is disappointing and sad to find my mother in soiled sheets due to the lack of skill among the staff. I wish we had sent her someplace else. The head nurse tells me everything is ok and getting better but It is not.

    About Knollwood Military Retirement Community

The Army Distaff Foundation was founded in 1959 as a 501 nonprofit organization. By 1962, thousands of Army wives worldwide had raised the necessary funds to open Army Distaff Hall as a residence for Army widows to provide necessary services that military benefits did not then cover. In 1989, the residential campus was named Knollwood, and admission eligibility was extended to retired military officers of all services, and to their female relatives. Since its inception, Knollwood has expanded to include four levels of care: independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing care, and the Special Care Center for individuals with Alzheimers and other forms of dementia. The evolution of The Army Distaff Foundation is the product of a unique philanthropic partnership. The Foundation’s straightforward mission is to support Knollwood, a full-service residential and healthcare community for retired officers and family members.

Founded in 1959 by Mrs. Lydia Taylor, wife of the then Chief of Staff of the Army, and Mrs. Rosamond Davis, Army Distaff Hall was opened in 1962. Notably, it immediately provided much-needed, first-of-its-kind retirement housing and healthcare for Army officers’ widows, who, at the time, received only minimal government benefits.

Retirees At Knollwood In Washington Use Military Principles To Stay Healthy

Paul Bricker has dealt with enemies before, but never quite like this.

Bricker was a colonel in the U.S. Army for 28 years, including tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. So he is very familiar with trying to survive in a hostile environment and dealing with insurgent threats on a daily basis.

But since retiring and going wheels up out of Kandahar back in 2012, he now finds himself in a different kind of combat.

For three years, Bricker has been chief operating officer of Knollwood, a retirement community in Washington, D.C. for military service members and their families. In normal times, overseeing 270 residents and 170 full-time employees would be challenging enough.

But lately, Bricker has been drawing on all his battlefield know-how to protect the people under his care. This time, the enemy is microscopic, highly contagious, and potentially lethal especially to the nations elderly.

The lessons I learned in Iraq and Afghanistan have been key, says Bricker. I never thought I would be in this kind of battle, but we are fighting with everything we have.

Think about it, and pretty much every family in America has become a military operation. On a daily basis, you have to think about issues like logistics and supplies getting safely from Point A to Point B and protecting yourself against an enemy that may not always be apparent.

In fact, Knollwood lost nine residents in the spring, and their average age was 91.

    Improving Care Through Communication

    Challenge

Older adults living with dementia lack the ability to properly communicate their feelings, experiences, and needs to caregivers. This limits and compromises caregiver response, causing stress, agitation, and reduced life quality for the patient.

    Our Response

We understand the importance of person-centered care. When caregivers understand the unique life experiences of their residents, they are equipped to provide better care. To this end, we are pursuing communication programs that promote well-being, empower caregivers, and personalize care to anticipate resident needs.

    Projected Impact

    We expect residents may:

    • Receive higher quality, more personalized attention because their caregivers will have a broader, deeper understanding of their preferences, experiences, practices, and needs.
    • Experience reduced levels of stress and agitation, because caregivers will be better prepared to implement strategies for calming and redirecting.
    • Adapt better to environmental or situational transitions, such as caregiver turnover, schedule changes, and other life events.
