Meadowlark Retirement Village In Sparta Adds ‘memory Care’ Unit
The first residents have moved into the new Meadowlark Retirement Village “Memory Unit” in the facility in Sparta.
For those residents who need more assistance as they are suffering from diminishing mental capacities, the newly remodeled apartments are designed to give a familiar comfort while the group kitchen and living room allow those with memory issues to continue to live in a home-like environment as long as possible.
The entire facility has been upgraded and broken into “houses” to allow for more directed care of those living at Meadowlark regardless of where the residents are in their lives.
The renovations cost $1.2 million.
The upgrades have not only helped those with memory issues live a higher quality of life, they have also helped those who still live independently in the facility.
World War II veteran David Cameron, 88, has lived at Meadowlark for a couple of years now. While his memory is still good, he uses a wheelchair to get around. He said re-organizing the facility into smaller “houses” has been good for him.
Cameron is in one of the independent living houses.”I enjoy the people I eat my meals with,” he said. “We are like a family.”
The memory care unit uses the “Household Model” of care for its residents, which gives residents one-on-one care and a personalized care plan that allows the residents to still live an independent life as long as possible.
