Searching For An Alternative To Aarp Here Are 6 Options

Nathan Malchman, Gerta Conway, William Deautriell, and ...

By Joseph Slife | 07/27/17 |

AARP, the nations largest organization for older Americans, traces its heritage to the late 1940s when a high-school principal set out to make sure retired teachers had adequate health insurance. About a decade later, the group she founded, the National Retired Teachers Association, expanded its membership and became the American Association of Retired Persons.

In the 1990s, that organization dropped its full title along with the requirement that its members be retired and became simply AARP, targeted to people ages 50 and up.

Today, AARP has an annual budget of nearly $1.5 billion, the bulk of which comes from royalties companies pay for the right to use the AARP name and logo when marketing products to older Americans. About one-fifth of the organizations budget comes from dues paid by 38 million members . With that kind of membership clout, AARP is one of the most powerful lobbying groups in the nation.

What does it lobby for? Among other things, AARP supported President Bill Clintons 1994 push for a large expansion of government involvement in healthcare. In 2005, the organization helped stop a Republican-led attempt to reconfigure Social Security benefits to put the SS program on a more solid financial footing. And in 2010, AARP riled many of its more conservative-minded members with its strong support of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act .

Aarp Services Inc And Aarp Financial Incorporated

AARP Services, Inc., founded in 1999, is a wholly owned taxable subsidiary of AARP that manages the range of products and services offered as benefits to members. Its offers include Medicare supplemental insurance member discounts on rental cars, cruises, vacation packages and lodging special offers on technology and gifts pharmacy services legal services and long-term care insurance. AARP Services founded AARP Financial Incorporated, a subsidiary that manages AARP-endorsed financial products including AARP Funds. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission in June 2010, AARP Financial announced the discontinuation of AARP Funds. AARP Services develops new products, manages and markets products and services, and creates and maintains partnership and sponsorship relationships.

B The Public Interest

In Reporters Committee, the Supreme Court held that, in assaying the public interest, we must examine “the nature of the requested document and its relationship to `the basic purpose of to open agency action to the light of public scrutiny.'” 109 S.Ct. at 1481 . The Court went on to state that FOIA’s

basic policy . . . focuses on the citizens rights’ to be informed about “what their government is up to.” Official information that sheds light on an agency’s performance of its statutory duties falls squarely within that statutory purpose. That purpose, however, is not fostered by disclosure of information about private citizens that is accumulated in various governmental files but that reveals little or nothing about an agency’s own conduct.

Id. That statement is nearly sufficient to resolve this case, for NARFE’s only significant public interest claim, as it originally framed this case, was that disclosure of the annuitants’ names and addresses would aid NARFE in its lobbying activities, and thus result in the passage of laws that would benefit the public in general and federal retirees in particular. Under Reporters Committee, these considerations are not relevant they involve not “what the Government is up to,” but only what it might be up to if NARFE had its druthers.

Study Outcomes And Follow

NARPO Annual Conference 2019

The primary outcomes were incident diagnosis of any GA, NCGA and CGA. Vital status and cancer diagnosis were ascertained by periodic linkage to the Social Security Administration Death Master file, follow-up searches of the National Death Index, linkage with cancer registries as described below and other mailings.

The follow-up time was defined as the time from the baseline questionnaire to the earliest of the following events: gastric cancer diagnosis, any cancer diagnosis other than gastric or nonmelanomatous skin cancer, censoring, or death. Individuals were censored at loss to follow-up due to respondent relocation outside of the cancer registry coverage area or the end of the follow-up period for the study . People who moved out of the coverage area but then returned remain included in the analysis if they otherwise meet the aforementioned inclusion criteria. Because the time periods are nonoverlapping and the endpoint occurs only once, statistical independence is preserved. Over a total of 6,421,022 person-years of follow-up time, 1,518 incident cases of GA occurred .

Cohort Characteristics By Intake Levels Of Ca And Mg

The median total Ca intake was 881.3 mg and Mg intake was 358.6 mg. The baseline characteristics of study participants stratified by above vs. below median intakes of Ca or Mg are detailed in . In general, with the exception of gender, the absolute difference in mean value or distribution for each characteristic was similar irrespective of Ca or Mg intake although these differences were statistically significant due to the very large sample size. The mean age was 62 years. Most participants were non-Hispanic white, former or current smokers and high school graduates or above. In comparison to participants with above median Ca or Mg intakes, participants with below median intakes were more likely to be non-Hispanic whites, ever smokers , never smokers , moderate/heavy alcohol drinkers , to self-report lower overall health, to have lower educational attainment and to have a higher HEI. The majority of participants in the NIH-AARP cohort overall reported moderate-heavy alcohol use by gender-specific standards.

Inclusion And Exclusion Criteria

Nonproxy respondents who completed the baseline questionnaire according to quality metrics predefined by the NIH-AARP were eligible for inclusion. To construct the cohort for the present analysis, we subsequently excluded the following respondents: proxy respondents end-stage renal disease at or prior to study entry any diagnosis of cancer at or prior to study entry total energy intake more than two interquartile ranges from the median intake level of the cohort, adjusted for gender and negative or zero follow-up time . There were no a priori exclusions based on the length of follow-up time. However, a sensitivity analysis was performed to evaluate those participants who were diagnosed with gastric cancer within 12 months of follow-up , given the possibility that these might represent prevalent cancers.

After application of exclusion criteria, a total of 536,403 respondents comprised the analytic cohort for our primary analysis .

American Association of Retired Persons , nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that works to address the needs and interests of middle-aged and elderly people in the United States. Its membership is open to all persons age 50 or older, whether working or retired. It is headquartered in Washington, D.C.

The AARP was founded in 1958 by a retired teacher, Ethel Percy Andrus, with the goal of helping older Americans remain physically and intellectually active by serving others. In 1982 the AARP merged with the National Retired Teachers Association , an organization that Andrus had founded in 1947 to obtain pension and health insurance benefits for retired educators.

One of the AARPs major functions is as a legislative advocate for the elderly at the federal and state levels, working to influence the passage of legislation that affects older citizens. The steadily rising proportion of elderly in the American population had given the AARP a membership of more than 30 million by the late 20th century. This large membership, coupled with the higher voting rates of elderly Americans, helped make the AARP one of the most powerful advocacy groups in American politics by the centurys end.
