A Look At Kelowna’s Home Care Facilities

Nursing home care, otherwise known as long-term care, is a service that represents the highest level of care that a senior can get without getting admitted to a hospital. There are essentially two types of care that these services dole out. The first type is short-term care, and they primarily involve providing rehabilitative services for seniors that need therapy and recovery from a surgery, accident, or malady like a stroke. Through physical, occupational, and speech therapy, these special services are designed to help seniors recover to a point where they can leave the round-the-clock facilities and resume life on their own terms. The second type that is offered is the administration of long-term care for seniors that have severe trouble with executive various activities for daily living, like eating, dressing, or bathing. Regardless of the level of care that is deployed, the facilities approach each case with the goal of creating a dignified, comfortable arrangement for every senior that is admitted.

Two Residents In Motion Picture Retirement Home Die Of Coronavirus

Nurse with elderly woman in wheelchair at retirement home ...

Two men who lived at the Motion Picture & Television Funds skilled nursing facility in Los Angeles have died of complications from coronavirus, Deadline reports. One death occurred Monday, at the nearby West Hills Hospital, and the other occurred Tuesday, at the MPTFs COVID-19 isolation wing. Both men had underlying health issues.

The deaths were announced by Bob Beitcher, president and CEO of the MPTF. According to Variety, one of the residents was 64-year-old John Breier, who had had multiple sclerosis for the past 25 years. His wife, Mona, was a member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees union, a spokesperson for the MPTF told Vanity Fair.

The second victim was Allen Garfield, 80, an actor who appeared in movies such as Nashville and The Stunt Man, according to his Nashville costar Ronee Blakely, per Variety.

Beitcher noted that both residents had been living at the retirement homes long-term care unit for many years. The retirement home is in Los Angeless Woodland Hills neighborhood.

Were all saddened, Beitcher told Deadline. They were both fighters, but they lost this last round. They were both in our long-term care unit for many years, and theyre grieved not only by their families, but by their caregivers who knew them so well and took care of them all this time.

Forgotten Hollywood Actors Retire In Style

NEW YORK Even Hollywood actors get old.

Most big-name celebrities will retire to their mansions with a houseful of hired help but what about the lesser-known character actors and backup dancers?

The Motion Picture and Television Fund Country House in California and the Actors’ Fund Homes in New Jersey are retirement communities that take care of little guys in the entertainment industry supporting stars and extras who lived by the maxim that there are no small parts, only small actors.

“It’s a matter of the industry taking care of its own,” said Actors’ Fund Executive Director Joseph Benincasa.

While both nonprofit homes have had their share of big-name celebrity residents the MPTF cared for Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner director Stanley Kramer and the Actors’ Fund housed Joseph Sultzer and Charles Marks, the comedy team known as Smith and Dale and the inspiration behind The Sunshine Boys the majority of residents are not as recognizable by name alone.

But their accomplishments are.

“I’ve had the most interesting life,” said 94-year-old former vaudevillian and Actors’ Fund Homes resident Blanche Collins Perry. “I played the music halls in London before World War II. I created a role in The Cradle Will Rock, which Orson Welles directed in 1937.”

What was it like working with Welles?

“He was a great director a bit of a genius and a very strange person as we all know,” she said.

The Kentucky native couldn’t have been more thrilled.

More On Duchess Of Sussex

The 74-year-old told ITV’s Good Morning Britain he is being “shunned and ghosted” by Meghan and revealed he hoped that the Queen would step in to end the estrangement.

As well as sitting down to talk to some of the residents at Brinsworth House, Meghan visited the on-site hairdressers and asked if they did nails as well as hair.

She also joined in with Christmas songs and carols and impressed one resident by speaking in fluent Spanish.

Rosario Serrano, 87, a former Flamenco dancer and singer, accompanied the music with a bangle made of bells.

She said she felt able to talk to the Duchess as a fellow performer, and that Meghan had said she understood because she was in the business before she met her husband.

Meghan told the chairman of the Royal Variety Charity, Giles Cooper, that it had reminded her of a similar visit she made back in Los Angeles.

Mr Cooper said: “There’s no question she felt amongst her own in some respects.

“And she mentioned a care home in LA that she visited before which reminded her very much of Brinsworth House, so she enjoyed it very much as much as the residents did.”

Retired Stars Find Assisted Living At The Lillian Booth Home

  • EmbedEmbed

The Lillian Booth Home in Englewood, N.J., is run by the Actors Fund as both a nursing facility and assisted living. Like the residents, many of the staff come from the entertainment industry.

SCOTT SIMON, HOST:

Imagine a home whose residents include retired opera singers, jazz musicians and movie and Broadway stars. This is the Lillian Booth Home just outside of New York City. John Kalish visited The Lillian Booth Home and caught up with some of its current residents.

JON KALISH, BYLINE: Eileen Pepper is a 71-year-old retired music teacher who moved into The Lillian Booth Home two years ago.

EILEEN PEPPER: My husband loves it here. He loves it here so much he moved in.

KALISH: Her husband is Alan Pepper who co-owned the storied Greenwich Village club The Bottom Line, but his wife has multiple sclerosis and he couldn’t take care of her at home. So she lives here in the nursing facility, and he lives upstairs in the assisted living section. Eileen Pepper shares her room with an opera singer, and not far away from her bed is a music stand and her guitar.

E. PEPPER: Living here, I live music. I breathe music. We have rehearsals and then we sing songs, and we perform for each other. And if you think you can sing, sing. People here feel comfortable doing that. Nobody’s judging them.

UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: There’s no business like show business.

KALISH: Informal performances take place in one of several activity rooms, and pianos are scattered throughout the home.

Royal Star And Garter

The innovation in aged care that could see nursing homes become a thing of the past

A slightly different type of care home, the Royal Star and Garter, was built in the 1920s as a hospital to provide accommodation and nursing care for injured servicemen in World War I. The home was initially situated on Richmond Hill in Richmond, London although all youll find there now is apartment blocks.

In time, the Royal Star and Garter care home housed several decorated war veterans and heroes, including Frederick Jeremiah Edwards, recipient of the Victoria Cross, who died at the home in 1964, Norman Bill Jewell, who was commander of the HMS Seraph submarine during war operations, and Nancy Wake, who fought with the French Resistance and lived in the home from 2003 until she passed away in 2011.

Over the years, the charitable trust behind this care home, the Royal Star and Garter Homes, opened other new homes in Solihull in the West Midlands, High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire and in Surbiton, where residents of the Richmond home moved in 2013.

We may think that when we retire, we are approaching the end of our lives. However, these inspirational people found freedom in retirement and lived each day to the full, continuing to sing, dance and pay homage to the entertainment industry. It just goes to show, your final act doesnt have to be any less exciting than your first and when it comes to taking your last curtain call, you can take your bows with no regrets.

Duchess Of Sussex Embraces Acting Roots To Bring Christmas Cheer To Retired Actors At Nursing Home

The Duchess of Sussex has returned to her acting roots as she visited a home for retired entertainers, mingling with older stars including Richard OSullivan for a morning of showbiz.

The Duchess, who is due to give birth to her first child in the spring, admitted she was feeling very pregnant as she charmed residents by chatting about her pregnancy and her life.

She brought Christmas cheer to the residents of Brinsworth House in Twickenham, south west London, which is funded by the £600,000-a-year proceeds of the Royal Variety Performance and 15p from every telephone vote in Britains Got Talent.

The Duchess, 37, spoke fluent Spanish to one resident and told the actors how she had visited a similar home for artists in Los Angeles many times, remarking much it felt like they were all part of one big family.

Among the residents she met were Richard OSullivan, star of 1970s sitcoms Man About The House and Robins Nest, and Mona Hammond, who played Blossom Jackson in the BBC soap opera EastEnders.

In the dining room of the Edwardian house, with decor evoking a mix between a seaside hotel and an old theatre, the Duchess was introduced to the 83-year-old former EastEnders actress and was told that she won an OBE for championing black actors.

Oh my goodness. Thats amazing, she said.

When she moved across to talk to retired West End theatre actress Josephine Gordon, the talk quickly moved to the baby.

Ive been reading about you in the papers, Ms Gordon, 87, said.

Uk’s Care Homes Tap Into ’boutique Vibe’ To Fill Empty Beds

From entertainers to seafarers, care providers are moving to bespoke offerings catering to niche markets

Brinsworth House, a care home for retired light entertainers, is a paradise for old pros, whether they are former wig makers, set designers or the one-time stars of the show. Among faded playbills, treasured programmes and portraits of actors lining the walls of the Middlesex care home, residents live out memories from before their final curtain call.

This home speaks to my soul, said Rosario, a former flamenco dancer who will celebrate her 90th birthday at Brinsworth House in June. We hold the memories of all the performers who have lived here. We have all lived very interesting lives and understand each others journey through life, so can talk about our thoughts, ideas and talk about the past. This home is quite extraordinarily perfect.

More than 80% of the UKs care home market is made up of independent, small and medium-sized providers. The last year has been tough for them, with some experts estimating that 6,500 could close over the next five years. Care homes had tens of thousands of deaths during the pandemic, which has left many beds vacant.

And yet demand for care beds is expected to soar in the next 30 years. This has created a new market opportunity, according to Debbie Harris, the founder and managing director of Autumna, the largest UK online directory of care services.

Mptf Nursing Home Residents Remain Covid

5 Reasons Your Loved One May Benefit from a Retirement ...

We are very excited, said Joe Benincasa, president and CEO of The Actors Fund. On Monday, we begin vaccinating residents and staff.

At the MPTFs skilled nursing home in the Valley, which is home to 240 industry retirees, administration of the first round of 300 doses of the Moderna vaccine began on Dec. 23 for residents, care-givers and essential staff. But the life-saving shots arrived too late to prevent a Covid-19 outbreak there in November and December, which saw the death of one more resident and the infection of 12 others, all but one of whom has since recovered after being placed in the facilitys isolation ward. Second doses of the Moderna vaccine will be given later this month.

Beginning Jan. 14, the Pfizer vaccine will be given to the rest of the MPTF homes residents and essential staff who come in frequent contact with residents. A second round of those shots will be administered 21 days later, administered by CVS Pharmacy because the Pfizer vaccine requires storage at much colder temperatures than the Moderna vaccine.

By the end of the program, everyone on campus will have been vaccinated, except for administrative staff who dont come into contact with residents, said Beitcher, who noted that the roll-out has been choppy.

In New York City at the Friedman Health Care Center, our partnership with Mount Sinai has offered the kind of good guidance we are fortunate to enjoy.
