PARKVILLE, Md.
Mice have been spotted in patients’ rooms, the dining hall and an activity room since August.
Walter Sobus, 92, survived World War II and the Korean War. Now diagnosed with advanced Parkinson’s disease, he is incapacitated.
Now, he’s facing a new problem: a mouse infestation in his room.
His only allies in this fight are his eight children, who, led by daughter Rose Filbey, take turns by his bedside.
“I’m disgusted. I’m worried for my father and other patients,” Filbey said. “I wouldn’t live in my house with mice. Why should the most fragile population have mice in and out of their rooms, up and down the furniture, in their shoes, in their bathrooms, on their toothbrushes? Why on the surfaces where they eat? This just can’t be.”
Family members said they have begged Oak Crest to fix the problem. In a written statement, the operators said: “The issue is of utmost concern and we are taking more aggressive steps to resolve it. The plan’s execution is well underway and features certified pest management professionals providing additional building inspections, new exclusion methods and materials and targeted on-site preventive treatments.”
However, Filbey claimed the problem is getting worse, and the mice are becoming more bold.

My mom has lived at Oak Crest Assistant Living facility for about 1 year. Recently, she complained of pain in her side. Upon examination, we found that her whole side was bruised. Xrays showed 5 fractured ribs. Mom will not tell the police who did this to her because she is afraid of retaliation. Their investigation is closed saying that it was an injury of unknown origin. There are workers who are complaining of being underpaid, overworked, and resentful to have to work on both Thanksgiving and Christmas. My mom was injured on Thanksgiving.
