BRIGHTON TOWNSHIP, Pa.
Nursing homes say they are struggling financially, especially since the pandemic. But Action News Investigates has learned some nursing homes are paying themselves rent amounting to millions of dollars per year including some tax dollars.
Nursing homes and state officials said the rent payments are legal, but advocates said the millions spent on rent takes away from bedside care.
Tiffanny Nicks said she was shocked by the sanitary conditions she saw while working in the kitchen at Brighton Rehabilitation and Wellness Center in Beaver County. They were handwashing these dishes with cold water, she said. Hot water is what sanitizes. Without that, you’re just sloshing it around the dishes which then go to the patients.
She quit the day she started and filed a complaint with the state health department. The state has not disclosed the results of its investigation but last year, Brighton was cited multiple times for sanitary conditions in its kitchen.
Nicks was outraged when Action News Investigates told her Brighton reported paying $7 million in rent last year to a company that’s related to its owner, Comprehensive Healthcare Management Services. That amounts to 13 percent of its total expenses, according to state records. Brighton said $3.6 million of the rent payments were an allowable Medicare expense.
Brighton is not the only nursing home that pays itself rent.
