Creating A New Vision
The Saint John Vianney Clergy Residence located in the Bronx, New York has a longstanding history as a home to the religious. From 1980-2001, the Saint John Vianney Clergy Residence served as the Saint John Neumann pre-seminary program for students planning to attend Saint Josephs Seminary. In 2003, Edward Cardinal Egan established the Saint John Vianney Clergy Residence. In 2017, Timothy Cardinal Dolan expanded the Residence to offer additional suites for priests who require a heightened level of care due to short-term and longer-term illnesses.
Our priests baptize our children, comfort us in the confessional, witness our marriage vows and hold our loved ones hands as the Lord calls them home. Diocese Expanding St John Vianney Retirement Center To Include Five More Apartments Guest Room

When Father Enrique Terriquez moved into the Saint John Vianney Retirement Center for Priests nearly 10 years ago, he was the first full-time resident. Now, there are seven others who live with him and, in the next few months, hes hoping for five more.
The Diocese of Boise is expanding the retirement center from its current eight apartments to 13, with five new apartments planned for the northwest and southwest corners of the center that is on the Nazareth Retreat Center property near the intersection of Five Mile Road and MacMillan Road in northwest Boise.
In addition to the apartments, there will also be additional parking space and a guest room for overnight guests. The approximate $2 million expansion will add about 8,700 square-feet to the existing 16,400 square-foot facility.
Before they retire, priests spend most their lives living in homes owned by the parishes they serve. Very few own their own homes. So when they get to retirement age, they dont have the equity built up in a home that most others accumulate over a lifetime, said Bishop Peter Christensen.

Retired Priests Gratefully Call New Cardinal Egan Pavilion Home
Cardinal Dolan recently blessed and dedicated the new Edward Cardinal Egan Pavilion, an expansion of the St. John Vianney Center for Retired Priests in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, which includes the John Cardinal OConnor Pavilion, now 13 years old.
Before the Oct. 12 dedication ceremony at 5655 Arlington Ave., Cardinal Dolan offered Mass in the chapel of the Cardinal OConnor Pavilion concelebrated by numerous priests, both active and retiredincluding retired Auxiliary Bishop Robert Brucato. Among the congregants were a number of benefactors of the St. John Vianney Center, named for the patron saint of parish priests, the Curé of Ars, St. John Vianney.
We are blessed in this archdiocese with this magnificent facility, Cardinal Dolan said in his homily. Its a gift from God, for which we are most grateful. And its a gift from Gods people, many of whom are here today. This could not have happened without you, through your generosity.
On several occasions throughout the Mass and dedication, he thanked and praised his predecessor, the late Cardinal Egan, the new facilitys namesake, for his genius in converting the former college seminary to the Cardinal OConnor Pavilion.
Were honored to name this new residence after him, Cardinal Dolan said of the Cardinal Egan Pavilion, which is connected to the Cardinal OConnor Pavilion.
The Cardinal Egan Pavilion has a capacity of 44, including a 13-bed enhanced care unit.

St John Vianney Retirement Village
St John Vianney retirement village is located in the heart of Ponsonby, just a few doors down from Ponsonby Road.
Originally constructed in 2001, the village was at capacity, and needed to expand to accommodate an increase in retiring priests.
This required the demolition of a large villa never an easy task in a special character zone andrequiring all the persuasive powers a planner can muster.
These structures were replaced with seven additional self-contained units, a new communal lounge, kitchen, library and gym, a new parkingarea and a large landscaped common area.
Despite the challenges of the character zoning, the need to demolish an existing character building, and the overall non-complying activitystatus of the application, the application was processed on a non-notified basis, with Civitas persuading Council that the project wouldhelp to restore and improve the special character and amenity of the area.

The Archdiocese of Newark currently has almost 200 retired priests. Many of these priests continue to be involved on a regular basis in pastoral ministry. In 1982, the Saint John Vianney Residence in Rutherford opened as a facility for retired priests who choose the communal style of living. In 1998, the Msgr. James F. Kelley Residence opened in Caldwell as a second facility for retired priests. A quarterly Newsletter is prepared and published by retired priests. They also offer Days of Recollection for retired priests from the entire State of New Jersey. The Director of the Ministry to Retired Priests also makes regular visits to those retired priests who are hospitalized or reside in nursing homes.

St John Vianney Priests’ Residence
The St. John Vianney Priests’ Residence is an addition to the existing John Cardinal O’Connor Pavilion in Riverdale, NY. The program includes 46 additional retirement suites and studios, with guest room accommodations on each floor including dining facilities with outdoor seating, a new kitchen, community spaces, administrative offices, and a new chapel.
The four level residential structure is linked to the existing John Cardinal O’Connor Pavilion to provide indoor access between each facility. The connecting level provides 18 suites which are designed to replicate the existing O’Connor suite sizes and decor.
Both facilities will now be supported with full emergency power capacities, as well as redundant heating and cooling capabilities. State of the art security and communication will also be integrated into each facility’s infrastructure.
The new facility maintains the charming character and scale of the existing O’Connor Pavilion while providing new site enhancements and walking opportunities. The site is uniquely located along the Hudson River allowing significant river views to the west and protected landscape to the east. A new landscape master plan will be implemented as a component to the St. John Vianney Priests’ Residence, which not only preserves critical existing elements of the Riverdale neighborhood, but adds 100 new trees to the existing property with extensive shrubbery and other diverse plant compositions located around the entire site.
Father Piacentini Enjoying New Home At St John Vianney Residence
PROVIDENCE Father David Piacentinis apartment at the St. John Vianney Residence is quaint, with a small bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette and living area. He is relishing what he calls a semi-retirement, as he concelebrates Mass daily at the Residence.
He says he is in good company, as he lives there with about 15 retired priests.
Im really glad that I am here with these priests, said Father Piacentini, who retired from his post as pastor of Pawtuckets St. Maria Goretti Parish on July 1. They are very dedicated. If someone calls them to do something, they will do it. Theres a lot of camaraderie.
Some of them are friends, while hes getting to know others. They include Father John McElroy, who just moved in to the Residence during the first week of August, as well as Father James Hynes.
Hes wonderful, said Father Hynes, who has lived at the Residence for eight years, and last served at St. James in West Warwick. Hes really inspiring.
Father Piacentini said everyone has been very welcoming. Hes enjoying each moment there.
To me, its like one big retreat, he said. Ive found myself getting more serious in my prayers.
Ordained in 1971, Father Piacentini attended Catholic School throughout his educational journey. He went to St. Ann School in Cranston, Our Lady of Providence High School, as well as Our Lady of Providence Seminary, and St. Marys Seminary in Baltimore. He also studied Spanish at URIs Providence campus.

Appreciation of the love and friendship of the late Msgr. Louis J. Kemphues and a concern for the well-being of our aging priests led Jim and Bernice Jarboe to respond to the dictum from those who have much, much will be required. As land owners, they did what was within their power to improve the quality of life of our elder diocesan priests. They donated a parcel of land and launched a campaign to construct Villa Vianney with the express purpose of establishing a comfortable residence for retired priests. The senior priests residence was named after the patron of pastors, St. John Vianney.

PITTSBURGH The grand jury report on child sex abuse in the Catholic church is leading to new questions about where the accused clergy are living now.
One such place is St. John Vianney Manor in Pittsburgh’s East Carnegie neighborhood.
At least one priest named in the report lives in the retirement community next to Bishop Canevin High School, and at least six “predator priests” were allowed to retire at the home for clergy who have stopped active work.
David Dzermejko, Leo Burchianti, Anthony Cipolla, Edward Kryston, Richard Terdine and William O’Malley all resided at St. John Vianney beginning in 1994.

According to the grand jury report, even in retirement some of those priests continued their illegal activity.
Residents who live nearby are disgusted and wonder how much more will come to light in the coming days and months.
“It’s like they have robbed children of their humanity, and to think that the hierarchy of the church was not only involved, but protected the priests, is just so incredible,” said Bruce Wertz, of Crafton.
