Del Webb The Beginning
D. W. is an exemplary builder of Active Senior Communities in the United States but didnt start that way. Delbert E. Webbs family was not wealthy as he grew up, and a familial illness had him quitting school to bring in a paycheck as a carpenters apprentice for a few years.
A career in semi-pro baseball was supplemented by doing carpentry jobs to make ends meet. While playing a baseball game with San Quinton Prison, Del contracted Typhoid Fever and, after barely surviving, was advised to move to a dry climate.
Del and his family had $100 in their pockets when they relocated to Phoenix, AZ, at age 29. He started off doing carpentry jobs wherever he could find them. Finally, the government awarded him a contract to build grocery stores in Arizona during the depression.
With his foot in the door building grocery stores, he applied for more government contracts. Soon Del Webbs company was building over 3 million dollars of buildings a year in the 1930s!
Towards the end of the depression, the NY Yankees owner needed to sell his franchise. Del and two others bought the NY Yankees for 2.89 million dollars.
In the late 1930s they diversified into building schools and airfields. During WWII, they built the Japanese internment camp at Poston, AZ among other government facilities for the next 15 years.
