Target-Date Funds: How They Work & How They Might Affect You

T. Rowe Price Retirement Funds, a Target Date asset allocation option, are designed to take you through retirement.

The asset mix of each Portfolio is based on a target date. This is the expected year in which participants in a Portfolio plan to retire and no longer make contributions. A team of asset allocation professionals adjusts each Portfolios make-up over time to ensure a noticeable and steady shift from equities to fixed income in the years leading to retirement.

The T. Rowe Price Retirement Funds are composed of actively managed funds and are managed to help retain your potential for growth, and aim to preserve the value of your assets at and after retirement.

As each Portfolio glides over time, its asset mix is adjusted. Looking at the image below:

  • Greater emphasis on aiming to provide an income stream in your retirement years
  • Actively managed T. Rowe Price funds with broad diversification
  • The Funds invest in a mix of equities and bonds that gradually becomes more conservative as the target Retirement Date nears
  • At the target Retirement Date, the Funds allocation to stocks is anticipated to be approximately 55% of its assets
  • The Funds exposure to stocks will continue to decline until approximately 30 years after its target Retirement Date, at which its allocation to stocks will remain at approximately 20% and the remainder will be invested in bonds

Is T Rowe Price Good For Active Traders

Why You Should Own T. Rowe Price Stock | TROW Stock Review

    T. Rowe Price is not a good trading platform for active traders. Pure stock traders and investors do not have much to look forward to here. The account fees and very high trading commissions are by no means the best the industry has to offer.

The commissions on stock trading are some of the highest youll see among top online brokers. There are many companies who offer way better commissions than T. Rowe Price. Thus, equities-focused investors should probably look elsewhere.

    How Target Date Funds Work

Financial services firms manage families of target date funds, with individual versions for each year, past and future. Investors choose a fund that targets their anticipated year of retirement, and they may continue holding it until long after the target year has passed.

With target date funds, the term glide path describes how a funds asset allocation changes over time. All of the funds on this list utilize a through glide path, where the managers continue to adjust the balance of stock and bond funds after the designated target year. For some funds, the asset allocation changes end about five to seven years after the target date. For others, the changes continue for several decades.

For each target date fund in our evaluation, we focused on the 2060 version, suitable for someone looking to retire in about 40 years. In addition, we also evaluated the 2020 version, and some earlier versions, for insight on how the fund familys portfolio evolves as you enter retirement.

    Advanced Order Routing Not Available

Advanced order routing is not available for users at T. Rowe. BNY Mellon-owned Pershing LLC is used to carry the accounts, but there is a problem. Pershing LLC receives payments for order flow of options and stock orders.

In other words, all kinds of institutional traders can pay to have Pershing LLC send all orders straight to THEM. What does this mean? Pershing should present you with the optimal price available, but they also profit from institutional investors who pay to have the orders sent their way. There is a significant conflict of interest here which may damage your trades.

    Mobile Apps And Security

    T. Rowe Price discusses how investors can navigate recent market volatility

    T. Rowe Price offers two distinct mobile apps. The first app is made for research and analysis and is very easy to maneuver because of its limited number of features and simple UI . It is made to suit institutional advisors.

The mobile versions do not give users access to charting and other research tools. Regarding security, all platforms have recently been upgraded with two-factor authentication.

The mutual funds are quoted daily, at market close. Traders can use a hybrid roboadvisor which will make a portfolio based on survey responses. The robo-advisor can be used together with an actual human advisor.

    Account Fees And Minimum Balance

The minimum account balance is $2.500 for regular accounts and $1.000 for IRAs. The account fees can be bothersome as well. T. Rowe Price charges a $30 yearly fee but that can be avoided in three ways.

The first is to qualify for Select Client Services, the second is to have made five or more commission-generating fees in the past year, and the third way is to hold $50.000 or more in T. Rowe Price mutual funds.
