Why Contribute To An Ira

A Minute about Money: Strategies for Retiring Single

Retirement as weve known it is changing. You will probably be more active and live and work longer, and you may need to rely more on what youve saved for income than prior generations. If you have a QRP, such as a 401, 403, or governmental 457, at work and regularly contribute, that might not be enough to accumulate the savings you need. Fortunately, you can contribute to both your QRP and an IRA.

An IRA allows you to save for your retirement and take advantage of tax benefits. Similar to 401 plans, investments in Traditional and Roth IRAs have the potential for tax-advantaged growth. This allows you to potentially accumulate retirement savings faster than you would in a taxable account. Tax deductible contributions and any earnings are subject to ordinary income tax when distributed from a Traditional IRA. Earnings from a Roth IRA, distributed in retirement, may be tax free.

What Is An Hsa

An HSA is designed to work with a qualifying high-deductible health plan . The money goes in tax-free, grows income tax-free and comes out income tax-free when you use it for qualified medical expenses.

You can carry over unused funds from year to year and the account is yours to keep even if you change jobs, change health plans or retire.

Take charge of your healthcare spending.

Save smart, itâs easy with an OPTUMBank® Health Savings Account or HSA.

An HSA is used to save for qualified medical expenses for you and your eligible dependents, both now and in the future. It works like a regular bank account.

However, an HSA has big tax benefits.

In fact, in most cases there are three ways an HSA helps you keep your money in your pockets and out of Uncle Samâs.

First, generally you wonât pay federal income tax on money you deposit into your account. Keep in mind the IRS sets limits on how much you can contribute each year.

Second, you wonât pay income tax on money you use for qualified medical expenses, that includes vision and dental expenses.

And third, your savings grow income tax free, helping you create a nice little nest egg for retirement.

More good news, with an HSA thereâs no use it or lose it rule,

â¦that means the money in your account is yours to keep, even if you change jobs or health plans.

Whoâs eligible for an HSA?

The main requirement is that youâre covered under a qualifying high deductible health plan or HDHP.

Understanding Your Ira Choices

There are two main types of IRAs –Traditional or Roth. Both types of IRAs offer investment flexibility, tax advantages, and the same contribution limits.

Traditional IRA – offers tax-deferred growth potential. You pay no taxes on any investment earnings until you withdraw, or distribute, the money from your account, presumably in retirement.1 Additionally, depending on your income, your contribution may be tax-deductible. Traditional IRA contributions can be made at any age if you or your spouse, if filing jointly, have earned income.

If you or your spouse are covered by a workplace retirement plan , such as a 401, 401, SEP, and SIMPLE IRA2, the deductibility of your Traditional IRA contribution depends on your modified adjusted gross income . Your income must be at or below the MAGI limits in order to qualify for a deduction.

If you turn age 70½ on or before December 31, 2019, the IRS requires you take your first required minimum distribution from your Traditional, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs by April 1 following the year you reach age 70½ . If you turned age 70½ on or after January 1, 2020 your RMDs begin by April 1 following the year you turn age 72. For each subsequent year, youll need to take your RMD by December 31.

If you, or your spouse, if filing a joint tax return, have earned income, you are eligible to contribute to a Roth IRA as long as your MAGI is at or below the phase-out limits. There are no age limits for making a Roth IRA contribution.

    Tracking Down A Lost 401

Its easy to understand why some workers might lose track of an old 401: Those born between 1957 and 1964 held an average of 12.4 jobs before the age of 54, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The more accounts you acquire, the more challenging it is to keep track of them all.

Perhaps this is why there are some 24 million forgotten 401s holding assets in excess of $1.3 trillion.1 Left unattended too long, old accounts can be converted to cashand even transferred to the state as unclaimed propertyforgoing their future growth potential.

If youre among those with misplaced savings, heres how to locate and retrieve them:

  • Find your funds: Ask previous employers whether theyre maintaining any accounts in your name. If the company no longer exists, contact the plan administrator. If you dont know the name of the plan administrator, search the Department of Labor website for the companys Form 5500, which will list its contact information. You might also check the states unclaimed property database via the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators.
