Research Your Family Tree

Wondering if youre descended from royalty , where your ancestors lived and what their occupations were? Now, thanks to a whole host of online resources such as Find My Past, researching your family tree is easier than ever. Check out census records, military records and search for globetrotting relatives from passenger lists. Who knows what youll uncover? You could also get your children and grandchildren involved as an ongoing family project. This is a great gift to offer to the family and generations to come will thank you for it.

Become A Personal Grocery Shopper

Finally, you can become a personal grocery shopper. Some seniors, retirees, and caregivers love to go grocery shopping. They developed skills like couponing, finding promotions, and know the best times of the day to buy. They know all the deals. However, there are just as many people that dont like to go grocery shopping at all.

Personal grocery shopping offers flexibility, and its perfect for people that are good at time management, organization and are always looking on how to improve things. If youre a master level doing groceries, this is a very laid back way to make money from it.

Companies like Instacart are perfect for older adults that want to make money to pay the bills, set their own schedule and hours while having fun and socializing with customers or clerks.

Personal grocery shoppers feel that the job is so simple and rewarding that dont feel like a job at all.

Another great option is Dumpling even though it is not as known as Instacart and Shipt. Dumpling offers a great opportunity for shoppers to be entrepreneurs as much as they want to be. Shoppers set their own rates, availability, and determine what stores they are willing to shop.

This hobby works better using online platforms but also works well if you advertise through your Facebook community, local grocery stores, or among your social network. All that it takes is you making some flyers, getting a calendar, having your car ready, then being good at selling and customer service.

Dont just do things that feel easy. Life is more fun with a little uncertainty. Remember that first rush of romance? You can get a similar surge from trying something new. A little risk goes a long way toward making your retirement feel more meaningful and more adventurous.

How To Find The Right Hobby

Whether youre a senior who is looking for something new to do or you know someone who is among the 25% of people over 65 who are socially isolated, you will be able to find a fitting hobby much more easily if you consider your interests and what you want to get out of a pastime.

For example:

  • Are you looking for a group activity or something that can be done solo?
  • Do you have an old hobby that you want to revisit?
  • Is there something youve always wanted to do or learn but have never had enough time?

Mobility limitations and impairments may limit seniors from looking for a new hobby or activity to get involved with, however, this can result in reduced social interaction, cognitive stimulation, and physical activity, which can lead to rapid mental and physical regression and a higher susceptibility to developing age-related diseases. Engaging in a hobby can hinder the development of age-related ailments and help promote a positive attitude about life.

Its perfectly fine if you start a hobby and realize its not right for you. Keep up your determination to find an activity that suits you and things will eventually fall into place.

Embrace And Extend Old Hobbies Instead Of Coming Up With New Ones

Im applying the same in with the old, out with the new approach to hobbies and activities. As I said, when Ive tried to explore wholly new interests or overly ambitious goals, it has tended to flop. What has worked better is building on embracing and extending things I already have a track record of enjoying.

As I mentioned, Ive always really liked motorcycles and rode for many years before the job got busy and before running kids around to soccer games and school functions consumed my weekends. Now I have much more time on my hands, and Im spending a lot more of it on the saddle of one of my two motorcycles, including a multi-day training camp for big adventure bikes out in the hills of very rural Colorado, where I did form a few new relationships. Its not just about riding either. Ive spent hours and hours puttering around in my garage installing various modifications and upgrades on the motorcycles, and thats been fun in a way none of the wholly new hobbies I tried ever was.

Similarly, after a total knee replacement finally took care of a severely arthritic knee, I took up skiing again. I committed and really gave it my best, which was easy because it was something I knew I already liked. By the end of the season, I was skiing much harder terrain than at any other point in my skiing life. Similarly, Ive always loved hiking, and several months into this retirement experiment I climbed my first fourteener .

Have A Second Childhood

81 Retirement Hobbies for Men, to Keep Your Body And Mind Active.

When we are children, the world is our oyster. We think that we can do anything. We ask for forgiveness, not for permission.

Then, as adults, the reality of life hits us. We are suddenly asked to conform to other peoples standards. We are surrounded by bosses, family members and other authority figures that are more than happy to tell us what we can and cant do.

Retirement, or semi-retirement, is an opportunity to become a kid again. It is an opportunity to pursue our passions without guilt or self-consciousness.

Think back to the early years of your life. Are there things that you always loved to do that you put on the back-burner as you built your career and supported your family? Maybe its time to start them up again.

For most of our lives, we carry so much weight on our shoulders. The happiest retired people I know have found ways to introduce a little silliness into their lives. They go to frivolous movies. They mentor kids. They draw, just for the fun of it.

Isnt it time that each of us remembered the simple joy of being a child?
